Global users watch over one billion hours of videos every day. According to Nielsen, Youtube has been the top streaming service by watch time in the United States for two years, based on data from February 2023 to January 2025.

Content Consumption Habits

YouTube Shorts collectively earned over 5 trillion views as of May 2024, around three years after the platform was globally released (July 2021). In September 2022, YouTube generated over 30 billion views every day through Shorts alone. The following year, the number of monthly users increased from 1.5 billion to 2 billion.

In a 2023 YouTube Trends Survey, 87% of respondents said they watched at least four different YouTube content formats over the past 12 months. These include streaming YouTube videos on TV, watching long-form videos, live streams, Shorts, and podcasts. YouTube statistics showed that the average daily time spent on the platform was 48.7 minutes in 2024, almost twice as much as its next rival and social media platform TikTok.

Music videos were the most popular type of video content among internet users aged 16-64 in Q3 2024. Nearly half (48.2%) of users worldwide said they watched music videos online every week – over 13% higher than any other type of video content. Comedy, memes, and viral videos were watched by 35% of users weekly, followed by live streams (27.7%), and educational videos (26%). Youtube users in Malaysia and Russia spent approximately 32 hours on the mobile app, while those in Singapore, India, Romania, Croatia, and Indonesia averaged around 29 hours.

YouTube user statistics also showed that South Korea topped the list of the number of monthly mobile sessions, with Android users opening the app around 335.7 times. India ranked second with 251.9 app opens, with Thailand third with 242.7 app opens.

According to YouTube, usage statistics show that television is now the preferred device for watching videos in the United States. As of December 2024, Americans are averaging over one billion hours watching YouTube Shorts, videos, podcasts, and live streams on their televisions every day.

In an older survey, 29% marketing professionals stated that they considered pre-roll skippable ads to be the most effective ad format for their YouTube strategy. Display ads, which appear on the right sidebar and include a thumbnail and text, ranked second (10%), with non-skippable ads in third (7%). Bumper ads and overlay ads in YouTube videos were viewed as effective by 3% of participants.

With YouTube generating more watch time than any linear or broadcast television network in the United States, brands are now directing a marginally greater share of YouTube ad spending to TV screens than to mobile phones. Spending on mobile ads fell from 51% to 42%, marking the first time that brands spent more money on YouTube’s connected TV ads.

Additionally, 78% of consumers said they would prefer to learn about a product or service from a short video, comfortably beating other sources such as articles (9%), manuals (5%), infographics (3%), webinars or presentations (3%), or sales calls (2%).
